He writes the notes, she writes the words, and together they make beautiful music!
The comedy of Neil Simon blends with the melodies of Marvin Hamlisch and the lyrics of Carole Bayer Sager to create this wonderfully funny, romantic story about an established composer and his relationship with an aspiring young female lyricist.
A musical romance, Hamlisch's disco-flavored songs blended with Sager's lyrics still hit the spot, combining harmoniously with Simon's bittersweet narrative, which was inspired by the real-life romance between Hamlisch and Sager.
The story follows the professional collaboration and personal travails of successful film and theatre composer Vernon and drama-queen lyricist Sonia, who is endlessly trying to break ties with her loser of an ex-lover. Amusing romantic complications and snappy one-liners land on target, and the score is a toe-tapping delight, highlighted by the melancholy duet "If He Really Knew Me" and the ebullient title song.
Several musical numbers are embellished by an engaging chorus of men and women, who shimmy, croon, and bebop across the stage with gusto, offering yeoman support. The action is fast-paced and sprightly, balanced with proceedings of occasional poignant moments. Ballads such as "Just for Tonight" and "I Still Believe in Love" are warm and soft interludes that are both thoughtful and touching.
Fall in love this autumn while you enjoy our talented cast and full live orchestra in... "They're Playing Our Song."
